i think an apology is overdue, for my prolonged absence. it is not so much my laziness even though it is part of the problem, but mostly a lack of excitement in life--i really don't think anyone would care how many potatoes i peeled for tuesday's dinner, or how many pieces of junk mail i shredded on a particular sunday, now would they?

lately i've had a couple very exciting months. here are some pictures from taiwan. i realize that most of them are of food. i don't think i can help it. taiwan, perhaps i shouldn't over-generalize, but at least during the time we were there, was cold and rainy. i'm a mild case of s.a.d. and the only thing that had cheered me up was food. it was all i could hope for that i was able to button my jeans by the time we left.

Even should your post only say you are well it is enough.

The pictures of food cause me to be jealous. Street food is available here but you must leave the popular areas for foreigners. In our city you must know where three certain streets are to find it. Ask local people of the places to go. I have found they are happy to direct you.

I believe the reason for your difficulty is Japanese custom. It is considered rude to walk as you eat or drink. Here, the streets that have vendors have many seats so you may remain outside but also polite. I call them park streets as they look to be long narrow parks. I have seen the same in Yokohama and Tachikawa so I assume this arrangement is common.

These places tend to be less expensive than the popular places for foreigners.

we were only there for a week and we didn't know anyone in japan, so we were careful not to veer off the main road. we did come upon a couple "street" food area, but still were heavily tourist oriented. whatever we found there we had found them in taiwan but for much *much* cheaper price, b/c japan had a great influence on taiwan. perhaps we didn't see the real japanese street food that are for the locals.

i'm planning to visit japan again, with more time and, hopefully, with my japanese better brushed up :)

have fun there! i really feel the japanese are from outer space. they are just ... very different.
